Pricing: Moluccan Cockatoos are fairly expensive birds, depending on your budget. Loudness: Moluccan Cockatoos are probably the loudest of all the parrot species, so if you’re sensitive to noise we would suggest looking into another species. Males tend to be more aggressive than females once they reach maturity at around 6-7 years. Moluccans will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases. They can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys for your Moluccan Cockatoo and plenty of supervision during play time. Anything and everything is a toy to them – especially if you don’t want them to have it. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. If you are unable to devote at least 6 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then a Moluccan Cockatoo is not for you. Arguably, these parrots are among the most affectionate animals on the planet! This is wonderful at first, but they quickly become like needy two year olds, craving constant attention and companionship. Origin: The Southern Moluccan Islands and Eastern Indonesia Trainability: Domestic hand-fed babies make excellent pet birds for dedicated caregivers. The darker the iris, the more likely it is to be male. After they have reached maturity (typically around 5 years of age) the females will retain a brown iris, while the males will turn almost black. Sexing: The sexes differ only in eye color, though all juvenile birds will appear to be female. This patch of skin can sometimes help determine a Moluccan’s age since, like humans, this area tends to wrinkle as the birds get older. The underside of their wings and tail is yellow, and when all of their feathers go up at once (which is common for this species) you will get quite a fantastic display of color! They have a bare patch of skin around their eyes which is blue in color. However, if you startle or excite one, you will see the feathers of its crest pop up, forming a type of “headdress.” Under this “headdress,” the feathers are bright orange and salmon colored. Blue-Headed Macaws are on the top of my list, along with Greys and Goldens as the top 10 birds to have.Moluccan Cockatoos are entirely pink at first glance. The chicks are pulled at 4 weeks and have been placed on the best diet, formulated specifically for Macaws, and are currently on three hand feedings a day.īlue-Headed Macaws are for the parrot aficionado. These traits, from my experience with this pair, have been passed on to their offspring. A DNA-Tested female, her parents are top quality calm, social, and because of their temperament foster other species. This is the last baby, from one of my best Blue-Headed Macaw pairs.
